Essay on Alienation and Isolation:
The question that I decided to learn more about is How does someone deal with being ignored and/or lonely? I wanted to explore that because I find it interesting when I see pictures of people that are lonely. I feel like people that are lonely can learn to cope with it and have a meaningful life.
In the short story- A Rose For Emily, the author explains that Emily did not want to accept that her father has died. She would be lonely and she couldn’t bear to be lonely. The man that she liked, Homer Barron did not like her. She did not want to be lonely, so she poisoned him with arsenic, so he would die, and she could have him be with her forever. She could not deal with being lonely. Her feelings for loneliness would not want her to live on.
Psychology Today had an article about loneliness. It explains that when someone does not have a friend to talk to about their feelings, they start to have feelings of loneliness and may ignore those feelings that it can get worse. Emily didn’t have anyone to talk to about her dad and Homer, so she felt more lonely because of that.
In the poem- The Raven, the author explains that the man was very lonely because he lost his wife, Lenore. His dealing of loneliness made him imagine that there was someone at the door of his house. He thought he heard knocking and other sounds, but he didn’t. The article that Psychology Today had on loneliness explains that stress and being tired can make feelings of being lonely. The man was probably very stressed out when his wife died, and he didn’t know how to cope with being lonely. He would talk to himself and try to comfort him.
In the novel- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, (“I felt so lonesome I most wished I was dead”) Huckleberry Finn was very lonely that he wanted to smoke. Huckleberry Finn felt very lonesome and ignored. His dad didn’t care about him, he would always be drunk and only wanted Huck’s money. Huck didn’t have anybody to connect with until he ran away and met Jim.
Both Jim and Huck were having feelings of loneliness, so they could connect and become friends. They did not want to leave each other because they would have to deal with loneliness by themselves. They both coped with being lonely and being ignored really well when they had each other. They had faith in each other that they could have a better life and have freedom.
Psychology had an article on how to cope with loneliness and what to do when you feel alone. One thing that I learned from that article that really matches Huck and Jim is to reach out and help someone else. Huck found Jim and was willing to help him out. Just by doing that he could start feeling more happy and have less feelings of loneliness.
Some similarities that I noticed was the man in the poem had similar feelings to Emily in the short story. They both have lost someone that they loved, and then on they let their feelings of loneliness get the best of them.
All of these authors and their ideas of loneliness are very similar to my ideas of loneliness, even though I don’t have feelings for loneliness. I love how each of these authors had showed at the end what the characters did to cope with loneliness. Some of the characters did not go towards a good path in their life (Emily), while others did, such as Huck and Jim.
What surprised me the most after learning more about loneliness is that there are many reasons for loneliness, but meeting someone that has a similar life can make you feel less lonely.
