This week we started reading October Sky. Before reading we watched 2 videos; one of the 1930s and the other on the 1950s. The book Of Mice and Men is placed in the 1930s and October Sky is placed in the 1950s. From watching the videos, I have learned that there was a lot of poverty in the 1930s. Life was happier in the 1950s with starting movies and music. After reading the first couple of chapters of October Sky, I started doing a traits chart on the different characters. I have learned that the mine workers are focused and determined on their work. Sonny is very imaginative. He has a lot of imagination and wants to build a rocket of his own. I have also learned that the people of Coalwood are caring and are close to each other. I am enjoying reading this book. I really want to know more about the relationships between Sonny and his family.

This week has been a busy week. We did the PSAT on Wednesday. I also was sick on Tuesday, so I didn't go to school. On Tuesday the class watched the movie Of Mice and Men. I wish I could have seen the movie; I would've been able to make more connections from the movie to my big question that I am researching on. I think if I have some time on the weekend or next week I will watch the movie on my own. Even though I didn't watch the movie I asked classmates questions about the movie. I learned that Curley was shown as a mean guy and treated his wife poorly. In the book, we just know that Curley is mean, but in the movie they really show what Curley does to his wife. He was very controlling towards his wife. We also started reading an article called Living in Sym. It had different definitions of symbiotic relationships. We made connections of those definitions with characters and ideas from Of Mice and Men. I made the connection of symbiosis to George and Lennie because they were very different people, but lived together in close association. Next week we will start to read October Sky. I hope that I enjoy reading that book. This week we finished reading Of Mice and Men. I really like reading the book. It had a very interesting ending. I learned that friendships can give meaning to our lives. Lennie has got into a lot of trouble in his life. He always tried his best, but still made mistakes. He was always afraid that George would be mad at him. He's learned that George has given meaning to his life. If he didn't have George, he would not have survived by himself. Friendships can also make you angry. George was tired of Lennie and his mistakes, that he decided to kill him. Friendships can make us feel happy and supported by others. I want to learn more on how friendships change our actions and how we may feel. |
